FUCKING INFERENCE

ok. i've had it....
i'm finally making a thread on 'inference'...

its really pissing me off.

why is it so commonplace to infer extraneous
shit when its obvious that you should only
interpret from what is there??

now i'm not talking about the types of
inference one would partake in when reading
metaphor... because metaphor relies on
inference to make it complete.
i'm also not referring to scientific inference
because NORMALLY, when science infers...
it does so with the intention to determine
its inference in relation to 'fact'.

i'm talking about TYPICAL inference that
causes interpretations to become skewed...
or, the typical reaction to add more into
a scenario in order to 'fill in the blanks'
based on a necessary outcome one wishes.

example (this is elementary, i know):

X + Y = Z

there is no other inference you can obtain
from this sentence other than the following:

Y + X = Z

Z - X = Y

Z - Y = X

(as well as much more advanced equations
that i refuse to devote time into typing out)

... IF we are basing the 'fact' on face-value
deductions.

my question...
wtf is the act of incorrect inference so
friggin common????

Because we don't know the values of x, y, or z. for example. let's say that x = 1, y = 2 and z = 4. then those equations would be incorrect. we infer that the values of x, y, and z are values such that the equations do in fact hold true...and also because cow cud is a twin...and what does that mean anyways?

you inferred values.. in that those values (of
X, Y, and Z) could possibly be incorrect.
but that is not what the sentence states.

it simply states that:

X + Y = Z

based on the face-value information you have,
XYZ could represent any value that causes the
equation to be 'true'... not false.

had a question of the validity of the equation
accompanied the equation... then your inference
would be spot-on... but that is what i'm saying.

if the equation were replaced with a worded
sentence, such as:

this morning, i made eggs for breakfast.

you have no reason to infer that i didn't make
eggs for breakfast this morning.

you see?
